Open Water Quality Sensors

Open Water Quality Sensors

Project description

Open Water Quality Sensors

A collection of Open Source Hardware(OSHW) water quality sensors

MinipH_inaction_med

A collection of Open Source Hardware water quality sensors, including designs to interface common pH, eC, DO probes. Developed over the years to be open, easy to use, accurate and effective. These are designed to be added to any type of automation projects for Hydroponics, Reef Tank Keepers, Homebrewers, Winemakers. And are also useful for Water Quality field Assessments, Remote Data logging, Marine and Lake quality applications. Some designs even have full Galvanic isolation with a simple single supply(I2C) interface!

While this is mainly a central landing page for the individual sensor’s project page, I felt that it would be better for the Maker Faire 2014 submission to create a single “project” page to act as a general table of contents for the group of Sensors. Small Update (May 2014), I was awarded a Maker Faire Editor’s Choice Award at the Bay Area Maker Faire for this project!!!

So why make these?

A valid question, and one I get often!

First a bit of background to this project.

Years ago I sought to automate some hydroponic functions and to help teach myself more about electronics, circuit design and analog sensor interfacing. I had designed some circuits previously, which I learned I had a lot of interest in it. This is when I decided to take it upon myself to help fill a void that I saw out there. After several years of trial and error, learning and many revisions I landed on a couple designs that have now become quite popular and are growing in terms of usage and support daily! (LeoPhi,MinipH, and MinieC). Since I have started this project many other similar ones have popped up and even a couple commercial operations, I take the added competition a sign of heading in the right direction toward solving some problems out there!!

Down to the Details

This project is about creating a set of open sensors that anyone can make or afford to purchase!

The best way to view this project is at each sensors level, so lets take a look at the most popular ones and see what in the works!

LeoPhi – A fully Arduino compatible pH probe sensor interface with USB support, built using the Leonardo ecosystem and allows for connection to wifi routers for sensor networks!

LeoEc – A fully Arduino compatible eC probe sensor interface with USB support, built using the Leonardo ecosystem and allows for connection to wifi routers for sensor networks!

MinipH – a simple very cost effective way to add pH sensing to any project via I2C interface.

MinieC – a simple very cost effective way to add eC sensing to any project via I2C interface.

Water Quality Tricorder – An update to the DIY pH meter, featuring multi Ion probe input on one BNC, eC on another and 1 wire temp probe input! All in a nice enclosure an easy to read screen and replaceable LiPo battery with charger and management circuitry!
